Mark West Neighborhood Church began in 1957 as a home Bible Study on Mark West Station Road. 15 people had a vision for a new church in the Wikiup-Larkfield area, and by the end of the year, they incorporated as a Christian and Missionary Alliance church. Soon, they placed their first ad in the Press Democrat. With a burden for children and youth, they began youth sings, and a Sunday School Fund became their first financial distinction, followed by a Bus Fund, and a Building Fund.
Those faithful people purchased property on Mark West Station Road, and built a church building in 1958. Under a succession of pastors, the church maintained a presence in the community, but remained small, due partly to its out of the way location. For a while, they used "The Hidden Church" as a tag line in advertising the church.
In 1979, under the leadership of Pastors Dick Taylor and Doug Swinburne, the men and women of Mark West Neighborhood Church began the process of building a new campus on Old Redwood Highway. They had great vision and faith, and God led them to build the church in a rural area. It was at Ellen Berry's dinner table that her husband, Orvan, convinced Pastor Taylor to build the church at its present location.
Now there are many homes nearby, with major development being planned along Shiloh Road and behind the church. The Town of Windsor has approved the Shiloh Road Village Vision Plan, which calls for shops, neighborhoods, schools and mixed use of the area surrounding our church. With development of Shiloh Road, and access to Old Redwood Highway south of our campus, Mark West Neighborhood Church is ideally located to serve this new community as it develops.
