What do you do at Neighborhood Church?
I’m the Senior Pastor, which means I’m the guy you usually see up front preaching on Sunday mornings. I also get to work with a fantastic staff and great volunteers, planning services, leading a mid-sized organization and serving our community.
Renee and I married in 1981 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where we both grew up. Renee and all of our children were born there. My oldest son Josh is married to Julie and is our Associate Pastor. Check out his page for more. Our daughter Lauren is a medical professional, preparing to become a PA (Physician Assistant), and our younger son, Andrew, is a student at Simpson University in Redding.
I was born in Japan, and lived in 8 different places by 5th grade, but Honolulu was my hometown for 28 years, until God brought us to Sonoma County in 1994. It wasn’t long before this became home; we love it here and can see staying here the rest of our lives.
If it has to do with water, I love it: sailing, canoeing, kayaking, boating, swimming, bodysurfing, snorkeling… I don’t get in or on the water enough, but I still love it! I also love electronic gadgets like computers and smartphones, and I find yardwork at home relaxing.
My #1 choice is worship music turned way up in the car. Hillsong United, Chris Tomlin, Paul Baloche, and David Crowder are all on the mp3 player in my phone. I also like oldies from the 70’s, and much to my family’s chagrin, enjoy country music on the radio in my truck.
Fiction adventure novels are a wonderful distraction—I usually can’t put them down. I also enjoy books that give advice on leading a church. Classics: Power Through Prayer (Bounds), The Master Plan of Evangelism (Coleman).
Confession time—I actually like going to romantic movies with my wife. I know, some people call them chick-flicks, but I guess I’m just a romantic.
NCIS, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist, Bones, and 49ers Football, Sunday after church.
Drink at Starbucks
Grande brewed coffee. Sometimes a triple grande nonfat latte. I drink my coffee strong and unsweetened. I guess that’s to make up for my choices in movies and TV shows!
5-10 feet above sea level anywhere along any coast, or alongside a river. I also love being alone with God in the forest, sitting on top of the bluffs overlooking Napa Valley in Robert Louis Stevenson State Park.
SF 49ers, SF Giants, University of Hawaii Warriors
1 Peter 4:11
If you speak, you should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If you serve, you should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
